"I've dropped about 15 pounds, but the main difference is how I feel. I handle stress so well now." I have always been quite fit, healthy, and naturally thin.
I focused on being as strong as I could make myself; not just for my own benefit, but to keep the comments about how I must starve myself to a minimum.
Then, three years ago I was in a car accident that twisted my hips and lower spine out of place. This put pressure on the nerves in my back, giving me chronic pain every day. Naturally I gained weight for the first time in my life! I didn't put the weight on evenly and felt tired all the time. Being inactive and in constant pain made me feel awful! I was unmotivated and depressed, and I had just moved to white rock so I didn't know anyone!
But in August '08 I entered a draw and won a free month of yoga. Me do yoga? I always thought of yoga as too "gentle", and I had never even heard of bikram yoga! But it was free, so I gave it a try. My first class was incredible! I couldn't take my eyes off the more advanced students, and I tried every posture; pushing myself to my edge every time. My flexibility was limited and hip hurt like hell but..... In a good way. I was hooked!
Since then I have been coming as much as possible. Two months ago I hit a major breakthrough when my misaligned hips suddenly corrected themselves in mid posture (pada hastasana) with a resounding thunk! I have dropped about three sizes and fifteen pounds to become the size I was three years ago! But the main difference is in how I feel, I have never felt stronger and my entire attitude has changed. I am so much calmer and I handle stress so well now. This yoga allows me to challenge myself as much as I wish. And thats what this yoga is about; YOU!
This studio is my sanctuary, and I am so grateful to know the people who work here! From Val (my yoga mom) Jen (my inspiration)Bruce (my sparring partner) to Jackie ( who makes me smile every time see her) I am deeply thankful for their continued support and friendship. Bikram yoga has truly set me on a new path that I look forward to continuing on for many years to come!
