"In my first class I could only breathe in half of what everyone else was doing... I quit smoking that very day, and haven’t so much as even thought of a cigarette since." Last year a co-worker of mine had joined a Bikram Yoga studio and raved about it. Every day I would come to work and hear about this Bikram Yoga. I would see her reading yoga books and I would occasionally sneak a peek at the beautiful people contorting themselves into impossible poses. One day my co-worker said to me, “You know, Yoga would be good for you, it could help you quit smoking. It would be hard for you to breathe with the shape that your lungs are in, and it would give you a good reason to quit once you step in that room”. It was two days after my 20th birthday and I was sick and tired of smoking cigarettes. I didn’t have anything to lose being an out-of-shape smoker, so I signed my self up on August 24th. In my first class, when everyone was calmly breathing through the first set of breathing exercises, I could only breathe in half of what everyone else was doing. I knew this was it. I quit smoking that very day, and haven’t so much as even thought of a cigarette since.
Yoga definitely sped up my recovery from smoking. I can breathe normally, smell the roses again, and I am not tired and lethargic anymore. Bikram Yoga has changed my life, I would recommend it for anyone struggling to quit smoking because once you step into the heated room and realize how sick your lungs really are, you will not touch another cigarette again.
So far it has been over eight weeks that I have been cigarette free, and I am feeling fabulous! My lower back pain from a skiing accident has stopped hurting, a tissue growth that I have on my neck is disappearing, and the constant searing pain that I was having because of the growth is now gone. I have also noticed that all of my clothes fit differently, and I feel more confident about my body. Many people have noticed that I am calm, relaxed, and more focused since I started yoga because I am generally a hyper person. I would like to thank the White Rock Bikram Yoga studio for your outstanding support, and friendly environment.
