November's Posture of the Month: Balancing Stick
Posted by BYWR on Tue, Nov 1st, 2011 10:19:40 pm
The balancing stick perfects control and balance by improving physical, psychological, and mental powers. In addition, it firms hips, buttocks, and upper thighs, as well as providing the same benefits for the legs as the Standing Head to Knee posture. It increases the circulation, strengthens the heart muscle, and stretches the capacity of the lungs. It is one of the best exercises for bad posture; strengthens the flexibility of latissimus, deltoid, and trapezius muscles; and improves the flexibility, strength, and muscle tone of shoulders, upper arms, spine, and hip joints.

October Posture of the Month - Standing Bow Pose
Posted by BYWR on Fri, Sep 30th, 2011 3:43:18 pm
The standing bow pulling is a perfect example of the ‘tourniquet’, or ‘damming’ effect in yoga, because it transfers the circulation from one side of the body to the other, and then equalizes it – circulating fresh blood to each internal organ and glad to keep them healthy.
Like the Standing Head to Knee, this pose helps develop concentration, patience, and determination. Physically, it firms the abdominal wall and upper thighs, and tightens upper arms, hips, and buttocks. It increases the size and elasticity of the rib cage and the lungs and improves the flexibility and strength of the lower spine and of most of the body's muscles.

September Posture of the Month - Standing Head to Knee Pose
Posted by BYWR on Wed, Aug 31st, 2011 8:32:09 pm
|
|
 |
|
Standing head to knee is one of the more dreaded, challenging, and transformational postures of the series. It is fantastic to build abdominal strength and hamstring flexibility, and improves focus like to other. The emphasis on locking the knee, although seemingly redundant at times, is so essential to this posture and so many others that it deserves the full range of your attention while you’re in the posture. The contraction of the leg muscles while standing on one leg can literally transform your knees, and also builds strong feet and ankles. If you have trouble balancing, focus on the weight distribution all over your foot, with an equal balance between the points below your big toe, baby toe and heel. Try to kick in the second set no matter what, and use your strong mind to keep advancing in this posture to make sure you don’t find a comfortable place and plateau. Remember, it’s standing head to knee pose, not standing hold the foot pose. When you finally reach the point of putting your forehead on your knee, the feeling of satisfaction will be worth every single time you’ve struggled with this posture. It’s so rewarding! |

BYWR Posture of the Month - Eagle Pose
Posted by BYWR on Fri, Jul 29th, 2011 8:07:31 pm
Eagle pose works at a very deep level to open up your joints, creating overall flexibility and increased circulation... especially to your hot spots and reproductive organs. This posture can help to break up fat cells on the thighs and arms, and is a great diagnostic tool for old injuries that need your love and attention. However, most students' favourite part about Eagle is that there's PARTY TIME right afterward!

July Posture of the Month - Awkward Pose
Posted by BYWR on Thu, Jun 30th, 2011 4:08:59 am
Argh, can you feel your legs burning? You should if you're doing the posture correctly! Awkward has the amazing ability to strengthen the many muscles in your legs because of the variance of the three parts. And benefits go much further than lean legs and flexible joints. Awkward pose also builds strength and flexibility in the feet and ankles, and keeps your toes agile and cute. Who doesn't want cute and agile toes? Seriously though, do your very best to stay in this one as long as the teacher is holding it, because it will also do wonders for your patience and determination. Remember, no one can steal your peace away from you (even if they hold second stage of Awkward too long)! |

June's Posture of the Month - Padahastasana (Hands to Feet Pose)
Posted by BWYR on Wed, Jun 1st, 2011 2:19:30 am
The best thing you can do in padahastasana is keep your chest touching your knees. This may not be an option in the beginning, but the hamstrings are one of the first things to start opening up when you begin to practice hot yoga. So when you grab your heels, try to feel the touch of your stomach on your thighs and your chest on your knees, and then keep them there as you try to straighten your legs. This posture is really great for shaping up the arms and shoulders, so make sure you are actively pulling the whole time. It's also therapeutic for lower back pain, so remember the dialogue 'stretch your body down from the lower spine towards the floor' because that really helps to decompress your spine. Just keep doing the best you can, and if you have any questions at all about the posture, please don't hesitate to ask me or any of the teachers, we are always happy to help. - Jen |

May's Posture of the Month
Posted by BYWR on Sun, May 1st, 2011 4:42:08 pm
Backward bending is one of the best things you can do to re-align your spine and bring it back to its natural, flexible state. It will also help to counteract what we're told is the 'natural' degeneration of the spine. For yogis, regeneration is much more natural!!
The compression of the first backbend helps to stimulate the nervous system and is much easier done when breathing properly. Make sure you practice your 80/20 breathing so you can enjoy more ease in this posture. Keep your lungs 80% full, and only exhale 20% continuously. This will also help to keep you 'lifted' so you are not collapsing into your lower back and creating tension there. And remember, it's lower spine, middle spine AND upper spine...TOTAL spine backward bending. A common mistake is to just hinge at the lower back, and this will create discomfort for you. If you would like a demonstration, or want a teacher to look at your backward bend, just ask! We will be more than happy to help you, as the technique will really aid in transforming your practice. Happy backbending everyone! |

April's Posture of the Month: Half Moon Pose!
Posted by BYWR on Fri, Apr 1st, 2011 10:32:24 pm
Half moon really helps set the tone for the class, so do your best to stay focussed on your breathing. One thing the teachers will tell you is 'no collapsing, constant stretching', and this is REALLY important to be getting the full benefits of this transformational posture. You don't want to look like a 90degree angle and crunch into the side of your body, you want to look like a nice half moon or half circle. What helps with this is to use the 80/20 breathing technique, and you will see your posture transform. Fill your lungs to their maximum as you stretch up to go into the posture, and only exhale about 20% of the air as you hold the posture in stillness. It takes a conscious effort, but that's what doing yoga is all about...increasing your consciousness and awareness. This technique will keep you lifted, and will help you reap the benefits of a flexible spine, increased energy, a toned mid-section and improved digestion. |

March's Posture of the Month: Pranayama Breathing
Posted by Bikram Yoga White Rock on Tue, Mar 1st, 2011 8:37:58 pm
This exercise is more challenging than most people realize, and doing it properly is vitally important to a good class. You probably already know that the intention is to expand your lungs and distribute oxygen through the body, but how do you know you're doing it right? Here's a little test for you: Take a quick breath through your nose and listen to the sound it makes. Now take a slow breath in the nose, but through the throat and listen to how different it sounds. That's what we mean when we say "inhaling and exhaling should be through the throat, nose and mouth are only passageways'. The breath will eventually last the entire 6 seconds, and it's normal to feel a little panicky...you're lungs are not used to you having so much control! You can always get your teacher to take a look at your pranayama in the cool down room after class to make sure you're on it! |

negotiations cont'd
Posted by jen on Wed, Apr 22nd, 2009 5:51:21 pm
Well, there's 9 days left of the month and i have 19 classes to do. gulp. 3 more advanced and 16 beginners. Helen said she would re-neg down to 35. I'm tempted, but considering how hard she has worked, i'm thinking i should follow through with it.
i am so impressed with all the troopers on the challenge, and what they're sacrificing to fulfill their commitment. Incredible what you are capable of doing when you make up your mind.
keep tuned. |

yoga negotiations: brought to you by Helen
Posted by Jennifer Lee on Wed, Apr 1st, 2009 8:46:32 pm
I just want to say, i have a very special place in my heart for Helen. She is one of the most dedicated, inspiring students i have ever taught. to this day, she has done 90 classes in 90 days. recently, judes challenged her to do 101, and she accepted the offer.
When Helen's 'partner in crime', Elise, signed up for our april 30 day challenge, i asked Helen if she would keep going until the end of April (for a total of 120 classes in 120 days!!) she told me i was crazy.
the negotiations were soon to come. this morning, Helen told me that if i was willing to do 40 classes in april, she would continue on to do her 120 days. but that's not all. 10 of my classes had to be the advanced class, an 84 asana series practiced only by teachers and advanced students who will be competing in the yearly asana championships. i told her she was crazy.
we squabbled a little bit, and i proposed 8 advanced classes minimum, 2 per week.
she said that would be ok.
so, here we go Helen. Elise. Jennifer. Katie. Lindsay? Let the games begin! :)

just don't feel like it
Posted by Jennifer Lee on Fri, Mar 20th, 2009 4:00:06 pm
well, here i find myself. sitting in the office, listening to a class being signed in outside, having spent all day entering new info into our website.
this is my first blog on the new site, class starts in 9 minutes.
i don't feel like it. ok, here go my 'reasons':
- i just ate 2 hours ago, and still feel a bit full
- i'm doing a double tomorrow, so technically i would still be on par for my 30 day challenge
- i haven't had enough water to drink today
- i have a lot of work to do here, and could use the hour and a half to get it done
- i feel sluggish and just don't want to.
I am very familiar with this struggle, i have to say. my 'reasons' pull at me nearly every single class i do.
4 minutes until class starts.
i know i can do the work later. i know i'll feel better and less sluggish once i'm done. i know i'll have an easier time doing a double tomorrow if i do class today. i can drink water later.
class starts in 2 minutes.
gotta go. my mat awaits. |

so glad i did it!
Posted by Jennifer Lee on Fri, Mar 20th, 2009 6:00:02 pm
It was a tough class. the sun is shining, so the room was hot. Rea was teaching, and the postures were long and hard.
as always, so glad i did it. all my reasons were moot, i have lots of time to do stuff, and that sluggish feeling is gone.
thank goodness it's friday ! :) |
